Welcome to Our Program
Welcome Letter from the Chairman of Surgery and the Program Director
Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center. Our goal is to train well-qualified, independent surgeons who have the skills and ability to function at the highest level and provide compassionate patient care.
Our nationally renowned faculty is committed to the education of residents with the mission of producing technically excellent surgeons, with strong basic science knowledge, and sound clinical judgement in order to provide well rounded patient care. Residents participate in a wide variety of cases across all specialties including colorectal, breast, ENT, Pediatric, bariatric, vascular, thoracic, general surgery, and more. Operative experience is enhanced by the use of cutting edge minimally invasive technology including robotic surgery. In addition, the surrounding culturally diverse communities of Brooklyn further enrich the training experience of our residents.
There is ample opportunity for clinical research including a one-year Oxford University research position after completion of the PGY2 year.
The General Surgery Simulation Curriculum supplements the clinical and technical education of residents across all PGY levels. The broad curriculum includes hand sewn bowel anastomosis, stapled bowel anastomosis, vascular anastomosis, floor emergencies, laparoscopic skills, and much more.
Our program strives to provide the best educational experience in an environment that assures a balance between academic and clinical activities. We take great pride in our success in preparing residents to become the next generation of expert practitioners.
The Maimonides Surgical Training Program is an ACGME accredited residency. The program accepts five categorical residents per year and five additional preliminary spots for the PGY1 and PGY2 years.
We encourage you to learn more about our training program. Please feel free to contact our General Surgery Residency Program coordinator, Seema Chauhan 718-283-7683, for any further information.
